Souper Bowl of Caring
I cannot believe another year has passed and we’re entering Souper Bowl of Caring 2014.
Who would’ve imagined that Houston would become the flagship city when the program launched here in 2007?
It’s amazing to witness the year-after-year commitment carried out by every retailer, church, school, scout troop and media partner.
Like many of you, Kroger is passionate about fighting hunger in greater Houston. Every day, thousands of our neighbors do not know where their next meal will come from.
As a board member for the Houston Food Bank, I have a personal passion for helping those who are hungry and lack resources. The hunger statistics for our region are alarming. On any given day, an estimated 66,200 people are hungry. Even more frightening: of those people, a great percent are children. When a child is food-insecure, their ability to focus in school is impaired, which directly affects their learning potential and therefore can put them at a disadvantage for the rest of their lives.
The need continues to grow with the latest reduction in SNAP food benefits, which makes it even more important for us to work together to help feed the hungry families in our community.
Souper Bowl of Caring is a one-of-a-kind hunger-relief platform. It’s the only program that brings together competing grocery stores and media outlets. That’s a feat in itself!
I genuinely want 2014 to be our best year yet. We have the right partners and resources. Everyone’s support is needed to take Souper Bowl of Caring to new heights.
Kroger is excited to again be a part of this powerful movement and we’re ready to help make this the best campaign year yet.
Fighting hunger is one of Kroger’s leading community focus areas. As a company, we are dedicated to feeding our neighbors in need through daily fresh food donations, financial grants, volunteerism and collection drives such as the Souper Bowl of Caring.
This year’s Souper Bowl of Caring campaign is now underway, and runs thru Super Bowl Sunday, February 2. You can support the campaign by donating a pre-packed food bag or making a cash donation at any participating retailer. You can also participate in collection drives hosted by local schools, churches and scout troops.
New this year, donors can also text “FEEDHOU” to 20222 to give $10 to the Houston Food Bank. We’ve made it even easier to get involved.
During the 2013 Souper Bowl of Caring, we collected more than 2.4 million meals across the city. We’re aiming even higher for 2014. Every donation helps!
