Culinary Academy
Program Overview
Founded in 2002, the Culinary Academy prepares low-income, underemployed adults for careers in the foodservice industry through a free, 12-week training program.
During the Course
- Students receive hands-on instruction in food preparation and sanitation, as well as learn lifelong skills for employment.
- Professional development in the program focuses on resume writing, goal setting, and interviewing skills for success in the culinary arts.
- Students perfect their skills by preparing meals, approximately 8,000 each month, for hungry adults and children in our community, including the Houston Food Bank’s Kids Cafe program.
- Participants also have the opportunity to become ServSafe Certified.
To participate in the program, students must be secured in housing or shelter, remain drug and alcohol free, possess a basic knowledge of math and reading, and have a commitment to work following completion of the program.
Houston Food Bank’s Culinary Academy is part of a national foodservice program through America’s Second Harvest- The Nation’s Food Bank Network, certified in the ServSafe Food Sanitation Management course, accredited by the National Restaurant Association.
