Isis
Isis Amanda is feeling the aches and pains of aging, and has the scars to show for it from recent operations on her knee and shoulder. She uses a cane to get around, and it’s difficult to be on her feet for long. So, when she took public transportation to a recent Senior Box Program distribution, she was grateful when one of the volunteers helped her carry the boxes back to her ride. “I can’t carry much weight right now,” Isis says. “It’s difficult for me to do anything. And I have to sit where I want to go because my knee swells up and it hurts.”
Isis, who lives alone with her daughter, says she’s unable to work these days. Her daughter’s income helps pay the bills, but things are tight. That’s why Isis is so thankful for the monthly boxes filled with nutritious food from the Houston Food Bank.
“I used to be able to fill my refrigerator for $100,” she says. “But now you can’t buy much with $100. Everything is expensive. The situation is really hard right now.” Isis was able to return home with rice, beans, pasta, vegetables, and two chickens.
“I went from having nothing to having two chickens,” she says. “This is more than enough. It all helps, and we’ll eat all of it!” Overfilled with gratitude, she shared, “I’m thankful to God and the Houston Food Bank. This helps a lot!”
