January Wellness
Eating healthier and starting a diet are common decisions made around this time of year. However are these changes truly going to lead to you having a healthier and more well rounded diet? Making a change to your dietary habits is something that is and can be very beneficial, but what you choose to change this upcoming year is what may be hard to decide on.
For overall wellness it is important to eat a colorful well balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. This is the starting point for implementing change in your diet. Choose one thing to work on, such as adding more fruits to your diet. Then once you feel confident in this area move on to the next. Creating an eating plan that you can sustain for the rest of your life and become a habit is something that will benefit you and your health! It will benefit your health much more than committing to something that will only last a short period of time.

Some practical examples of this can include:
- Adding more vegetables to meals you already cook such as adding grated, chopped, or shredded veggies like zucchini, carrots, broccoli, or eggplant to curries, soups, stews, and sauces
- Swapping out a snack in your day for a whole fruit such as a banana or pear, or chopped veggies like carrots or celery
- Switching the grains you eat to whole grains such as from white pasta to whole wheat pasta, or white bread to whole wheat bread
- Swapping out 1 soda a day to water or flavored water
- Try making a habit of adding fruit to breakfast everyday – strawberries to your waffle, blueberries to your oatmeal, banana on toast
- Swapping out the salt for more of your favorite herbs and spices
- Include more fatty fish and seafood into your weekly meals
Once each small change feels normal to your routine and eating habits, then consider adding in another change. You will be surprised how these changes will add up over time. By the end of the year, the choices you make today will be fueling a healthier, stronger you, one meal at a time!
