Summer Food Service

Over the summer, the Houston Parks and Recreation department hosts the Summer Food Service program for youth 18 years and younger.

From June 10th to August 16, the Summer Food Service Program offers free breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Houston Food Bank’s Kids Café program also provides free meals and snacks to children in childcare, after-school and summer meal program sites. Visit the Kids Cafe online map to find a Kids Café meal site near you.

Beyond Food Assistance

Enrolling in state benefits can open the door for more than just food assistance.

If you receive state benefits – including SNAP, TANF, or WIC – you can gain discounts to museums, the Houston Botanic Garden, the Houston Zoo, YMCA memberships, and more!

For assistance applying to SNAP, Medicaid, WIC or TANF, visit a Houston Food Bank Community Assistance Program location. Learn more here. Our navigators are at over 30 locations around southeast Texas.

Beware of SNAP Scam Calls

Never give out personal information to unexpected callers. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission will never contact you by phone, text, or email to ask for your card number or PIN.

A scam caller may display the Lone Star Card Help Desk number (800-777-7328). If you suspect a scam, hang up and call the number on the back of your Lone Star Card.

If you are a victim of the Lone Star Card fraud, report it to the Lone Star Card Help Desk at 800-777-7328. Also report the case to the HHS Office of Inspector General at 800-436-6184 and to your local law enforcement agency.

Summer Sun Safety Tips

Fresh Mango Salsa

A great, healthy snack
Course Side Dish, Snack

Ingredients
  

  • 3 ripe mangos diced
  • 1 medium red bell pepper chopped
  • 1/2 cup red onion chopped
  • 1/4 cup cilantro chopped
  • 1 jalapeno seeded & minced
  • 1 cup cabbage chopped
  • 1 large lime juiced (~1/4 cup juice)
  • 1/8 to 1/4 tsp salt to taste

Instructions
 

  • In a serving bowl. combine the prepared mango, bell pepper, onion, cilantro and jalapeno. Drizzle with lime juice.
  • Using a large spoon, stir the ingredients together. Season to taste with salt, and stir again. For best flavor, let the salsa rest for 10 minutes or longer.
