Scan Health Plan donates to support Senior Box

In Texas, an estimated 350,000 seniors (60+) are experiencing food insecurity each day. HFB’s Senior Box Program is designed to alleviate food insecurity among seniors (60+). Throughout a 10-county area, 98,260 seniors annually participate in our Senior Box program. The program fills pantries with shelf-stable food items, such as canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice, and hot and cold cereals, once a month.

One of the nation’s largest not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plans, SCAN is dedicated to keeping seniors healthy and independent. SCAN Health Plan’s $25,000 contribution will allow HFB to expand our Harris County Senior Box program within to include culturally responsive food items to 3,753 Senior Box participants. Culturally responsive food can be defined as foods that are culturally tied to populations through traditions, religion, and customs. Often the foods are grown regionally, are a centerpiece in holiday celebrations, and carry deep meanings to certain communities.

Having the ability to fulfill requests continues HFB’s commitment to manifold voices while better serving our clients who may not speak English and may have culturally sensitive food needs. We are proud to say our Senior Box program is now funded in part by SCAN Health Plan.
