Sylvester Tuner

Houston Food Bank extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Congressman Sylvester Turner. He was a great friend of the Food Bank and a true champion for food security.

Congressman Turner’s unwavering dedication to Houston ensured countless families had the resources they needed to thrive. He was one of our early board members, he helped win funding for the Surplus Agriculture Grant program that benefits all Texas food banks, and he also was one of the supporters of the State funding that helped us procure our main facility.

We are proud to have partnered with Turner in City of Houston initiatives such as the Mayor’s Back 2 School Fest presented by Shell and Freedom Over Texas, both of which directly benefited our programs and the children that we serve. He also joined in celebrating milestones for our community, including the opening of our Keegan Kitchen. As City of Houston Mayor during the COVID-19 pandemic, he and his administration were key and formidable partners in the city’s hunger relief efforts.

We are profoundly grateful for Turner’s leadership, compassion and commitment, which have left a lasting impact on our mission to provide food for better lives and on the lives of so many Houstonians. Our thoughts are with all who were touched by his remarkable service.
