The Nutrition Education and Health Promotion team needs your participation as we create a culturally relevant cookbook that will reflect the diversity of our neighbors, partners, staff, and communities! We are asking you to submit your favorite “comfort food” recipe from the cuisines of one of the following cultures that HFB serves. These cultures include, in alphabetical order, Afghan, African American, Asian-Indian, Caribbean, Central American, Chinese, Filipino, Mexican, Middle Eastern, South American, Sub-Saharan African, and Vietnamese foods. With this cultural diversity in mind, we are asking you to share your favorite comfort food dish that you’ve fine-tuned and mastered over the years. These are the tasty dishes – maybe passed down from your Mom, Dad, Grandma, etc, – that family members look forward to eating whenever you prepare it for family gatherings, Sunday dinners, cookouts, daily breakfast, or any other occasion. We ask that you consider the following when submitting your recipe:
- Local availability of ingredients – Offer substitutions for hard-to-find cultural foods. Ex. habanero pepper can be used in place of scotch bonnet pepper used in traditional African and Caribbean cooking.
- Convenience – Is the dish relatively easy to make?
- Cost – Is the dish reasonably affordable for food-insecure individuals?
