HungerMitao
HungerMitao (which translates to “Wipe Out Hunger”) began as a rally cry for the Indian American Council (IAC), founded in 2017 by Raj and Anna Asava at North Texas Food Bank, to mobilize the Indian-American community around the issue of hunger by promoting the adage “give where you live” on behalf of local food banks.
Now branded as HungerMitao, this grassroots volunteer-driven initiative has expanded across the nation to include a HungerMitao Coalition of Chapters in many cities/states including: Houston (Houston Food Bank); Dallas (North Texas Food Bank), Fort Worth (Tarrant Area Food Bank), New York City (Food Bank for New York City), Atlanta (Atlanta Community Food Bank), and SE Michigan (Gleaners Community Food Bank).
At the Houston Food Bank (HFB), HungerMitao is energizing the Indian-American community’s support of HFB’s mission to provide “food for better lives” by addressing hunger awareness, encouraging active volunteering, conducting food drives, and supporting fundraising campaigns.
HungerMitao’s important educational and time/food/monetary donation efforts are conducted to facilitate the distribution of food assistance throughout HFB’s 18-county service area including 1 million people who are experiencing food insecurity.
Get Involved
HungerMitao brings together Indian-American community members to support the Houston Food Bank in various fun and exciting ways. Currently, HungerMitao participants plan, promote, and host volunteer, food, and fundraising events throughout the year virtually and at Houston Food Bank East Branch location (535 Portwall Street, Houston 77029).
We are ready to plan HungerMitao volunteer events to celebrate important Indian-American holidays. Contact Kathy Lipman (klipman@houstonfoodbank.org) to plan, reserve, and conduct a HungerMitao group volunteer experience.
Volunteer
Donating volunteer time is vital to maintaining the nutritional wellbeing of our neighbors throughout the Houston Food Bank’s 18-county service area.
Your donation of volunteer time at the Houston Food Bank is valued at a meal-a-minute. That means if you volunteer for one 4-hour shift, you will facilitate 240 meals for children, adults, families, and seniors.
Our neighbors, who are experiencing food insecurity, do not have consistent access to enough nutritious food to fuel a regularly healthy lifestyle. They often are faced with making tough choices about what they can or can’t afford.
When there is not enough food to eat or funds to purchase more, families may water-down food and beverages or eat inexpensive and unhealthy meals.
Some may be deciding between paying for groceries or paying for medicine/utilities/housing/education.
Contact Kathy Lipman (klipman@houstonfoodbank.org) to plan, reserve, and conduct a HungerMitao group volunteer experience.
We suggest the following shift opportunities:
Monday – Friday: 8am – 12pm; 1pm – 4pm; and 6pm – 9pm
Saturday: 8am – 12pm; and 1pm – 4pm
Sunday: 9am – 12pm
